March Is Girl Scout Month

Camp News, Retreats

Camp Tecumseh YMCA serves numerous Girl Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs from Jan-May and mid August-December. Scout troops take advantage of Camp all year but the March schedule provides opportunities for the girls to earn two different badges.  All badgework will be conducted by Camp Tecumseh Staff and will follow the Junior Girl Scout Badgebook.  Camp also provides the badges for each girl at the end of the weekend.

You can learn more about Scout Outings to Camp Tecumseh on our website or by calling and speaking with our staff.

3000 Girl Scouts and 2000 Cub Scout visit Camp Tecumseh each year.

Retreats Director Kyle Linback (and Hazel the rabbit) will be manning a booth at the Kaleidoscope Girl Scout Leader Fair for Central Indiana Girl Scouts this coming Saturday.  Be sure to visit our Camp Tecumseh booth in the gymnasium.  The event is being held at:

New Nature Center Display

Camp News, Outdoor Education, Retreats

Wandering Albatross (Biggest bird on record)

Wandering Albatross (Biggest bird on record)

Tom and Keith from the Outdoor Education staff have been hard at work this winter working on several projects, one of which is a new display for the Nature Center. The display shows silhouettes of several birds found in Indiana as well as the biggest and smallest birds on record. Each silhouette is placed at the perfect height for children and adults to stretch out their wings to compare them to the bird that would have a similar span. Next time you are at camp, check it out next to the bird viewing window.

Calendar for Hoosier Burn Camp

CT in the Media, Retreats

Monticello Firefighters Union Local 2278 has put together the 2009 “Calendar of Local Heroes” to raise money for Hoosier Burn Camp.  Bob Scott of the Journal and Courier has written a story about the calendar and the mission of HBC.

The summer camp includes canoeing, paddle boating, fishing, swimming, archery, crafts, hay rides, horseback riding and a variety of activities not found at a typical camp.

Special programs at the camp help children build self-esteem while learning to deal with the burn scars and psychological trauma.

They want to sell out their run of 750 calendars.  We love having Burn Camp here every year… it’s such a great group of kids and firefighters.

To order the 2009 Monticello Firefighters calendar, visit the fire station at 120 W. Washington St. in Monticello or Jerry’s Photography at 105 W. Broadway in Monticello. The cost is $10 if you pick them up.

To order by mail, send $16 to the Monticello Fire Department, 120 W. Washington St., Monticello, IN 47960. Make checks out to Monticello Firefighters Local 2278 and write “Calendar” in the memo line.

All proceeds go to the Hoosier Burn Camp.

Check out the 2008 calendar at www.jerrysphotography.us.

The Monticello Fire Department and Hoosier Burn Camp

CT in the Media, Retreats

Monticello’s Herald Journal wrote a short article about the Monticello, Indiana Fire Department today, and it mentions Hoosier Burn Camp, which is held here at Camp Tecumseh every year.  HBC is a great time for many kids who have suffered burn injuries, and we know that it’s often the highlight of year for many Indiana firefighters as well.
