What was it like to be a pioneer in the early 1800's?

You can learn some things about it from books and pictures, but if you really want it to “come alive”, you need to experience it. Pioneer Heritage is designed to give the students a “hands-on” feeling of what it was like to be a pioneer in Indiana’s early history.

What was it like to build a log cabin, grind your own cornmeal to make johnnycakes, set a trap line or build a bridge? These and other activities were regular occurrences in pioneer life. Through participation in the Pioneer Heritage program, the pioneers’ life in Indiana becomes a “hands-on” reality for these students.

Above and beyond the history experience, you will build and expand your relationships with the students in ways that are nearly impossible in the classroom. Living, working, and playing together helps build the types of relationships that will enhance learning back in the classroom.

Understanding our past, appreciating the present, and expanding our vision for the future, is what Camp Tecumseh’s Pioneer Heritage program is all about.

"The trip to Camp Tecumseh is an experience that our students look forward to and almost always recall as their favorite part of fourth grade.  Students are able to see, feel, smell, taste, and hear what it must have been like to be a pioneer. Besides the academic value, the trip is a great opportunity to build positive relationships between the students, the teachers, and the parents."
