This program is excellent hands-on enrichment for classes studying Indiana History or the westward movement in social studies.
Understanding our past, appreciating the present, and expanding our vision for the future is what Camp Tecumseh's Pioneer Heritage Program is all about. Pioneer Heritage is designed for students from grades 3, 4, & 5.

Life was difficult in pioneer times. Or so we are told in books. But the best way to really gain an understanding and appreciation for what the pioneers went through is to try to live it today. Spending time at the Pioneer Settlement students will get a taste of what the pioneer's life was all about.

What was it like to build a log cabin, grind your own corn meal to make bread, set a trap line and build a bridge? Students will experience these activities and more such as:

Candle Making
Pioneer Games
Huck Finn Fishing
Path finding
Lessons at the School House
Reading Hoosier Poets and Writing about Pioneer life.
Tending the barn yard animals

Making history come alive, the pioneers' life in Indiana becomes a "hands on" reality for the students.

The day ends with a fun campfire program filled with songs and skits.

Christmas in the Colonies & Winter in the Settlement are our pioneer programs that take place in December, January and February. Our Pioneer Heritage Program is adapted to suit the colder months. The activities that are added are:

Baking cookies
Hunting for the feast
Toy making
Quilting

This is a great way to add excitement to the winter months!

"Fantastic - they went the 'extra' mile for us."
- Chris G., principal
