Outdoor Education Day Program

Field trips and day camp all in one

There is plenty of uncertainty facing many school corporations and their schedules as we head into the 2020-2021 school year. Many schools are delaying the start of the fall semester, or beginning the semester virtually.

To provide an alternative that coincides with delayed and virtual schedules, Camp Tecumseh is hosting day-long Outdoor Education experiences for 2nd-5th graders. Whether it is learning about the life of the pioneers or exploring our ecosystems here at camp, your child will have a wonderful time in a beautiful setting and with our professional staff.

Lunch will not be offered so be sure to pack a sack lunch for you and your students (coolers will be made available).

Every guest and staff person at camp are required to bring a mask and wear it in mandated areas. More information about mask wearing, and additional safety practices that camp is following can be found here.

Each of our programs offered are age-appropriate and meet Indiana State Standards. There is an A and B version of each program so you can sign your student up for multiple days and they will have two different experiences.

Quilt Camp

Join a group as passionate about quilting as they are about community.

A community of quilters awaits at Camp Tecumseh. Serving quilters of all ages, Quilt Camp provides a space to hone your quilting skills, and work on your quilting projects. Held six times a year at the Tecumseh Leadership Center, Quilt Camp is more than just a project space, it’s an active, supportive, and inspiring community composed of people who regularly pray for each other, support each other, and build each other up.

Quilting

Your next project is waiting

Whether you’ve been quilting for decades, or just bought your first sewing machine, Quilt Camp is the perfect place to hone your skills, learn new techniques from fellow quilters, challenge yourself with a new pattern, or just finish that project that’s been sitting for too long in your craft room.

Hone Your Skills

There’s no better place to grow as a quilter than at Quilt Camp. With ample time to experiment, dozens of experienced quilters happy to answer questions, and a shop full of supplies, you have every reason to stretch yourself outside of your comfort zone. If you’re new to sewing, don’t worry. Lots of campers learned to quilt for the first time at Quilt Camp.

Try new things

With occasional workshops led by experienced instructors for every level of sewer, recommended patterns that reflect camp’s theme, and impromptu lessons led by quilt campers, there’s always something new to try.

The Joy of Accomplishment

Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment that accompanies finishing a project. On the last day of Quilt Camp, take part in “Show and Tell” where you have the opportunity to share your finished project with all of Quilt Camp.

Community

A vibrant community built on trust, faith, and encouragement

Quilt Camp is so much more than a place to make a quilt. With dozens of quilters attending year after year, Quilt Camp has become a family. It’s a place to connect with friends new and old. It’s a place to chat about kids, grandkids, vacation plans, struggles, doubts, joys, and accomplishments with people who support you, encourage you, and inspire you.

From the layout of the sewing rooms, to the setup of the dining hall and sleeping quarters, Quilt Camp is intentionally designed to foster authentic community.

Shared Spaces

Strike up a conversation with your neighbor as you work on your project. Meet a new friend over breakfast pastries. Ask about the book somebody is reading before bed. Intentionally designed spaces like our circular tables, bunk-style sleeping arrangements, and communal sewing rooms help foster relationships through proximity.

Shared Activities

While quilting takes up most of the schedule, activities like the Quilt Camp book club, nature hikes, and games provide lots of opportunities to meet new people. Activities like zip lining and morning chapels may be available depending on the time of year.

IF QUILTS COULD TALK
MARCH 15 – 17, 2024

Happy Spring! Just a few weeks ago, we were at the January – Where the Stars Shine Bright –  camp and had a great time sharing the projects, laughter, and the snowy, chilly view as we stitched. We’re excited to share the warmer weather and some fun vocabulary with you in March.

You have probably heard the saying, “What happens at Quilt Camp, stays at Quilt Camp.” Well, if quilts could talk, what stories would they tell? Here is your opportunity to stitch your story or someone else’s. We invite you to quilt with your own words as you celebrate all that is special or important to you, your family, a neighbor, best friend, co-worker, a child…the list goes on. Each and every quilt you make is more than a quilt. It’s also a story, and we are blessed to be able to express ourselves with fabric, needles, and thread. There is always a story behind our quilts and it’s wonderful to be able to stitch our love, thoughts, prayers, and wishes into them for the recipient.

We are eager to share some creative project ideas with you at camp. Take a look at them, and if you are interested, Nancy J would be happy to order them for you and bring the order to camp.

Camp will begin Friday morning and we will finish with Show and Tell on Sunday right before lunch. If you would like to arrive on Thursday at noon, as an early bird camper, please note that on your registration form. We will have a pizza party that night and breakfast Friday morning. We look forward to joining you for three fun-filled “Quilt Your Story” days in March.

  1. MINI ALPHABET QUILT, Primitive Gatherings. 42 1/2” x 42 1/2”. $10.00

Moda recently had a holiday quilt-a-long with a festive vocabulary list and a few filler blocks called Letters to Santa. They used this mini alphabet quilt pattern to make all the letters.

You can write your own story with these letters by choosing the perfect words as you think about the person you are making the quilt for. If you go to the Moda Letters to Santa web site, you will find lots of creative projects that were inspired by the quilt- a- long.  I loved the cute little pillow that spelled CHEER for a cheerleader, the Halloween word quilt, and the set of three personalized family quilts.

  1. SPELLING BEE, Lori Holt. $34.95   A terrific, inspirational resource that has 100 letters, 10 numbers, 20 punctuation marks and picture blocks in two sizes- 6” and 12”, plus 18 quilt projects. You will be amazed at how much you can say with these letters and pictures! This book is a favorite.
  2. LOVE LETTERS FOR BETH, Pink Parakeet Designs. $10.00. Fat eighth friendly, 3 sizes. You can add signatures or notes for a keepsake quilt.
  3. SPELL IT WITH MODA DRAWSTRING BAG. A FREE pattern. Follow the directions to turn your favorite letter into a great drawstring bag, perfect for gifting. 1/2 yard for exterior, 1/2 yard for a letter and lining, 2 yards twill tape or ribbon, 18” x 34” batting if quilting.

We are excited that Nancy J Fabrics will be back with us at camp, and Nancy will be happy to bring you any of these books and patterns. 260-563-3505. Her web site is www.colorsgonewild.com. When placing the order at Nancy J’s, mark it for ‘pick up in store’ when you check out

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about Quilt Camp

Do I need quilting experience to come to Quilt Camp?

No. Quilt Camp is a great place to learn. In fact, that’s how a number of quilt campers learned to quilt. However, you will need to provide your own sewing supplies.

What equipment do I need to bring?

You’ll need to bring your own sewing machine and sewing supplies, including a sewing machine, fabric, thread, scissors, rulers, needles, etc.  There are irons and ironing boards available in every room. We have a vendor onsite in case you forgot something at home. The vendor usually has a wide variety of fabrics, patterns, and accessories. We also “hire” an instructor for each Camp to help with projects offered for each themed Quilt Camp. You are welcome to bring your own projects or take part in the projects offered.

I don’t have a sewing machine. Can I borrow or rent one from Camp?

Unfortunately, we do not have machines we can rent out.

Can I bring my own chair?

Yes. While Camp does provide a chair, many quilters prefer their own. You may also bring an extra cushion for your sewing chair.

Can I bring my own food?

Yes, with some restrictions. Due to health department codes, we are not able to offer the use of our refrigerators to our guests. However, you are welcome to bring your own food that does not require refrigeration. However, please make sure that it is in an airtight container as to not draw insects. Please keep the food with your luggage in your room.

Will I be sharing a room with others?

Yes. Each of our rooms sleeps up to ten people. Indoor restrooms are located at the end of each wing. Each restroom has 4-5 stools, sinks, and showers with individual dressing areas for privacy.

My sewing equipment is really heavy. Can I get assistance moving my equipment?

Yes. Members of the Leadership Center staff will be able to assist you with your belongings when you arrive and when you depart.

Can I reserve a bottom bunk?

There is a limited number of bottom bunks. Please mark your request for a bottom bunk on your registration form. These are usually given on a first to register, first serve basis.

Outdoor Education Field Trips

The Best Field Trip Ever Awaits

Since 1924, Camp Tecumseh has provided children with impactful educational experiences that enable students to connect with, and gain respect, for themselves, their community, and the natural world. Over 600 acres nestled on the banks of the Tippecanoe River provides the setting for a two or three day outdoor classroom experience students will never forget. Our first-class facilities are designed to ensure our guests a comfortable experience while facilitating relationships that bring school communities closer together. Heated, handicap accessible cabins with attached showers and restrooms serve as home base and provide an environment as engaging as the activities that will take place in them. Eat hearty meals in our two spacious dining halls with accommodations for up to 700. Join us as our highly trained staff leads you through a one-of-a-kind experience that will have your classroom and community raving.

Community

Building Relationships. Building Community.

Relationships are the heart and soul of our two, three, and four day camp experiences. From the way we teach trails to the way we serve our meals, we’ve engineered every detail to strengthen the bonds of friendship in the classroom, and encourage the development of community back home. Meals served family style around a large table, opportunities for free play, hands-on team oriented activities, plenty of thoughtful discussion and a shared cabin all contribute to a healthy environment of relational development. Break outside the mold of the classroom and discover a new side to your students and yourself. In our environment, don’t be surprised when your students reveal unknown strengths, become leaders, ask questions, speak out, and discover their potential. At the end of your trip, you’ll leave with a tighter-knit group of students, new friendships with your students’ parents, and a shared experience that will bring your community closer together for years.

State Standards

Bringing State Standards to Life

Camp Tecumseh Outdoor Education experiences are more than just fun field trips. Each program is designed to seamlessly integrate with your curriculum by meeting state educational standards for every grade level we serve. We create unforgettable experiences in our natural, outdoor classroom, and our talented, highly trained staff members will help you and your school meet the goals of both your classroom and your administration. Harness the power of hands-on, experiential learning and bring your curriculum to life.

Foundations for Success

Building Future Leaders Starts Here

Grades 5 – 8

The world’s most influential people didn’t achieve success through sheer luck. Instead, they mastered a number of key skills that help them make decisions, navigate complex issues, and harness the power of the group.

In the Foundations for Success program, students are introduced to five of those key skills: leadership, trust, communication, problem solving, and self-confidence. Through a number of challenging, team-oriented activities, students will utilize these foundations in ways that will benefit them both inside the classroom and out.

Every activity encourages students to apply the five foundations in creative and insightful ways. In Camp Tecumseh’s outdoor classroom, students are challenged to negotiate tricky group dynamics, solve complex puzzles, and think on their feet while developing empathy for others.

Trails

Communication Station

Interactive and thought provoking group activities that encourage students to think about the ways in which they communicate.

Optimist Challenge

A uniquely designed obstacle course that promotes self-confidence and builds trust with classmates.

Survival Simulation

A demanding wilderness simulation that requires sound problem solving and leadership skills to succeed.

Teams Course/Group Initiatives

Presented with a number of mind-boggling scenarios, students must use problem solving skills to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks.

Mission Possible

An adventurous mission through the woods that will test problem solving and leadership skills.

Climbing Tower

A thrilling climb up the rock wall that instills self-confidence and encourages trust and communication.

Pioneer Heritage

Bringing 1811 to Life

Grades 3-5

In the early 1800’s individuals flocked to the Indiana Territory under the promise of a better life. Over the years they developed a way of life that rewarded hard work. While books and pictures tell part of that story, Camp Tecumseh brings the pioneer times to life through authentic, hands-on pioneer experiences. Build a log cabin; grind cornmeal and learn how to make biscuits over a fire; set a trap line and learn how to catch and trade the pelt of a fox; create an improvised bridge that you and your compatriots can cross; go fishing with nothing but a hook, some line, and a stick; care for barnyard animals; navigate through the woods using landmarks; explore the diversities of the Native cultures of Indiana; and so much more. The kids are in the center of the action as they learn to live life as a pioneer.

Earthship Journey

Get Your Hands Dirty Learning About the Earth

Grades 4-6

In the Earthship Journey program, students get their hands dirty in our three different ecosystems as they discover the remarkable processes of nature and the value of environmental responsibility. The Earthship code is the guiding principle behind every activity. Consisting of cycles, sunlight energy, changes, relationships, communities, differences, and gifts, the code provides a framework for understanding the mechanisms behind the wonders of nature. Dig into the soil, investigate animal habitats, write tree themed poetry, learn how foresters calculate the amount of timber in trees, catch and investigate invertebrates living in the creek bed, and so much more. In addition to these activities, each student also takes part in recreational activities including canoeing and archery.

Trails

Pine Forest

An un-harvested Christmas tree farm planted in the 1940s creates an ideal environment to study the different stages of the soil cycle and learn about the effects of overpopulation.

Oak Forest

The massive oak trees that make up the oak forest provide the perfect setting for understanding the forest cycle and the relationships between living things. From rotten log investigations to tree-themed poetry, students gain a wider understanding of what happens in the forest over the long term.

Nature Center

An interactive exhibit, the Nature Center is the perfect place to learn more about the surrounding ecosystem. Learn about reptiles and amphibians with real frogs, turtles, and snakes. Visit the inside of a beehive and play exciting games that illustrate the food chain.

Ghost Creek

Students have a hands-on learning experience as they search for macro-invertebrates in our aquatic ecosystem. They take on the role of water quality scientist as they determine the cleanliness of Ghost Creek based on temperature, pH testing, and the creatures they find.

Grades 4-6

It’s Christmas on the homestead. Travel back in time to the 1800s and experience winter life in the Indiana Territory. While books and pictures tell part of that story, Camp Tecumseh brings the pioneer times to life through authentic, hands-on pioneer experiences. Build a log cabin, bake pioneer Christmas cookies; learn to sew quilt squares; make authentic pioneer toys; hunt for the Christmas feast; set a trap line and learn how to catch and trade the pelt of a fox; create an improvised bridge that you and your compatriots can cross;  care for barnyard animals; explore the diversities of the Native cultures of Indiana; and so much more. The kids are in the center of the action as they celebrate Christmas as a pioneer.

The Magic of the Night

Magic happens when the sun goes down at Camp Tecumseh. A roaring fire and wholesome entertainment will have you and your students singing and dancing, acting and laughing as our staff leads you through songs, skits, and jokes that will have your class telling stories for years. After campfire, take a hike through the woods without any light. Follow our staff as they teach you and your students how to navigate using your ears and your sense of touch. Lie on your back beneath a shimmering blanket of stars and learn about the constellations and the wide universe. Listen to the gleeful shouts of students as they shoot down the Bullet slide or the Black Hole slide in darkness. Witness the bonds of friendship forming in the cabin before bedtime as students, chaperones, and teachers recount the day’s events as they slowly nod off to sleep.
