Giving Back

Fall Partner Service Day

Community service is a vital part of the Tecumseh mission and every October we excitedly welcome back members of the Tecumseh family to get back and give back to camp.

On October 10, , volunteers from all over converged on camp to make improvements to the grounds. This year’s projects included framing in teambuilding elements, spreading pea gravel over playground spaces, revamping the trails surrounding the Accipiter, planting flowers, and building fire pits in front of Buffalo and Whitetail lodge.

Our volunteers arrive at 9am in the morning.

One of the projects includes framing in Yankee Ingenuity, a popular trail in the Pioneer Heritage program for school groups. In Yankee Ingenuity students learn how to build a bridge by tying together sticks using the clove hitch knot.

Pea Gravel is spread across the element to increase safety and prevent flooding. Prior to framing, Yankee Ingenuity would often flood after rainstorms.

Four new firepits have been installed in front of Whitetail and Buffalo lodges. On the weekends, it’s common to see guests gathered around fire pits they bring from home. With these permanent installations, they can enjoy a fire without the hassle of packing a fire pit.

The firepits are made out of stone and assembled by hand. A strong adhesive holds the stones in place.

Every fall and spring we plant chrysanthemums along the River Village lodge and the entrance sign at the bottom of the hill.

Additional pea gravel around Fort Discovery and other playground spaces will make them safer for our campers.
